Will Others Notice My Weight Loss?
Oct 15, 2024When will others start to notice my weight loss? This is a common question many people have on their fitness journey, and I can relate—I had the same concern!
I vividly remember stepping on the scale and discovering that I had shed 30 pounds. The excitement was overwhelming; I felt a tremendous sense of achievement. The weeks of making healthier food choices and committing to exercise were finally showing results! My clothes were fitting looser, and I walked with a newfound spring in my step.
I wanted to share my success with friends and family, but I hesitated, not wanting to seem self-absorbed. So, I kept my progress to myself and wondered when others would notice my weight loss, especially since I still had 70 pounds to go.
It was discouraging when no one mentioned my transformation. I soon realized that people are often caught up in their own lives, which is perfectly fine. It took me losing 50 pounds before someone finally acknowledged my efforts.
Through this experience, I learned that I place a lot of value on others' opinions of me. While it's not inherently negative to consider how others view us, basing my self-worth on their feedback— or the lack of it— can be unhealthy.
Rewarding Yourself When Others Don’t Notice
Celebrating 40 pounds down! I just completed a bike ride with my new hydration pack.
We must commit to our healthy habits not for the recognition of others but for our own well-being. Now, I take a moment to congratulate myself after completing my daily walk, enjoying a protein shake, or treating myself to a small bowl of ice cream instead of a gigantic serving.
I've also discovered the joy of new hobbies. Instead of splurging on everything at once, I buy items gradually as rewards for maintaining my habits or losing another five pounds.
For example, I have developed a passion for biking. My husband has a hydration pack with a water bladder that allows him to sip water without needing to stop and unscrew a bottle cap. After losing 40 pounds and committing to biking, I treated myself to my very own hydration pack, and I absolutely love it!
A smartwatch to track my movements was another rewarding purchase.
It's essential to find ways to reward yourself that don’t revolve around your favorite comfort foods.
With all that said, be your own cheerleader! End your workouts with a little celebration, whether internal or external. Explore activities that fortify your character and help you maintain new habits. Over time, you may even start to crave these healthier routines.
In my heaviest days, I dreaded going for walks, often experiencing hip and knee pain. It was tough! It took me nine months to progress from walking a quarter mile to three miles. Now, I look forward to my morning walks as an opportunity to reflect, listen to an audiobook, or admire the beauty of nature. Just last week, I spotted an adorably fluffy red fox, and yesterday, I helped a small turtle cross the road.
I transformed from making every excuse not to exercise to walking outside or using my indoor bike on rainy days. Did this change occur overnight? Absolutely not. Yet, looking back, it feels like only days ago.

Returning to my original question—when will others notice my weight loss? It's possible that no one will recognize or comment on your success, and that's perfectly okay. Stay focused on the positive actions that will lead you further along your weight loss journey. Don’t let distractions take you off course.
Do something today that your future self will thank you for tomorrow.
Having walked this path myself, I now make it a point to compliment and celebrate others when they achieve weight loss. It's hard work and deserves recognition!
Keep pushing forward!
